"Renowned for its abundant wildlife, bellowing waterfalls, and idyllic pools, the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve is over 100,000 acres of protected forest. Enjoy a day exploring Belize’s ... morelargest national park starting with the Hidden Valley area where you’ll visit the picturesque 1000-foot waterfalls which can be viewed from a lookout deck. At your next stop, you will go on a short hike to Rio Frio Cave, the source of the Rio Frio River and the largest cave entrance in Belize. You will be amazed by the stalactite and stalagmite formations. As soon as you enter you will see huge stalactites hanging from the massive cathedral-like vault which was part of a cave system that the Maya used to bury their dead.
Your next stop is at Rio On Pools, a series of shimmering natural swimming holes and rock waterslides that allow for cooling relaxation, and meditation. Enjoy a water massage from cascading waterfalls that run over a wide riverbed and smooth granite rocks. We take a homemade picnic lunch break at the pools, followed by a short drive to our next destination, the fabulous Big Rock Falls, a 150-foot waterfall on Privassion Creek. After a 20 minutes hike including numerous wooden stairways and climbing over boulders, you will arrive at the bottom where the 150-foot waterfall stands. This waterfall is a sight to behold and after your hike, the cool spray of mist from the waterfall is refreshing as you swim in the clear, deep pool below. "

This is a waterfall lover's dream! There are 3 waterfalls on this trip: The unnamed waterfalls, the Rio Frio Waterfall, and the Twin Waterfalls. These beautiful waterfalls are located ... moreup in the Vaca Reserve which is about 8.5 miles on the Hydro Road which is about one hour drive from downtown San Ignacio. This is my favorite place in Belize!!

From the time you get on the pontoon boat on your way to the waterfalls, you will be engulfed by the beautiful scenery of the river gorge. While enjoying the scenery we travel slowly on the river bank trying to find some wildlife. Some days we see a lot, and some days we don’t see anything. Hence the reason I do not guarantee wildlife but the great adventure, scenery, and waterfalls will always be there. However, you will see images of the wildlife we encounter on the trip many times, however, the wildlife is not guaranteed as it is not a zoo.

You can get to the location where the pontoon boat is waiting for us in two ways. One, you drive all the way down to the river bank. Two, you can hike the recently built trails that pass through the jungle while learning about some of the traditional edible and healing plants that were used and are still used by the Mayas.

A great tour combination for the adventurous traveler would be the Barton Creek and Big Rock tours. After enjoying the mystical tour of the underworld in a canoe; we prepare for an ... morehour-and-a-half drive on the Mountain Pine Ridge road to Big Rock Falls. This impressive waterfall is the most beautiful in the area, it is 100 ft high boasting a deep emerald pool filled with spring water perfect for swimming, or for the more adventurous; cliff jumping. The tremendous view of water rushing over giant granite rock and plummeting into the perfectly round pool at its base provides a rush of excitement. outcroppings. The footpath to the falls is a 20-minute hike and involves some moderately challenging climbing down to the valley below.

MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE Rio on Pools, Rio Frio Cave, and Big Rock Falls The Mountain Pine Ridge reserve is over 100,000 acres of protected forest. It is comprised mainly of Honduras pine ... moreforests, some wetlands, the Macal River valley, and some subtropical forests. The area is mainly granite and limestone, and the area is home to numerous rivers, springs, waterfalls, and caves. This is truly a nature lover’s haven! There is a small forest ranger post and very little habitation, save for a couple of isolated Mayan communities and a small settlement of Mennonites. A former logging settlement at San Luis is now abandoned since the area has been protected since the 1940s.

This stunning and unique natural habitat is home to numerous bird and mammal species and is a great place for birdwatching and enjoying the peace of the natural environment. The first feature of the reserve that we will explore is the Rio Frio Cave, the source of the Rio Frio River and the largest cave entrance in Belize. Our next stop is the Rio On Pools, a series of shimmering natural swimming holes and rock water slides that allow for cooling relaxation, and meditation.

Enjoy a water massage from cascading waterfalls that run over a wide river bed and smooth granite rocks. We take a homemade picnic lunch break at the pools, followed by a short drive to our next destination, the fabulous Big Rock Falls, a 150-foot waterfall on Privassion Creek. Here, the cool spray of mist from the waterfall refreshes swimmers in the clear, deep pool below. This is a day of hiking, spelunking, and swimming with opportunities for wildlife watching not to be missed!
