This site is located in the Blue Hole National Park which is located 12 miles southeast of Belmopan on the right side of the Hummingbird Highway.
Caves played a very important role in ancient culture as the Mayas considered caves to be supernatural realm where their deities and ancestors resided. Caves were the portal between the tangible human world and the invisible world of the gods, a place called Xibalba. It was here that the ancient Mayan Shamans performed their most sacred rituals and ceremonies and this was the underground domain of their gods.
A guided exploration into this very spectacular cave system begins with a rigorous 50-minute hike on uneven jungle rainforest terrain. Then prepare for a steep downward walk that takes you miles down to huge caverns full of dazzling crystalline rock formations, you'll follow the same footpaths the Maya Shamans and priests once traveled to reach these ceremonial chambers. The guided tour will have participants crawling through cracks and crevices beholding spectacular cave formations, learning about its history and geology, as well as viewing ancient Mayan pottery, beads, obsidian knives, and even human skeletal remains that have been calcified in the limestone floor dating back 2,000 years. Tubing through Belize's unique underground cave system is the must-do tour in Belize. After meeting your Belize guide, you will walk to your air-conditioned transportation for the ... moreapproximately one-hour drive to the Caves Branch River and its winding path through the Mayan Mountains and numerous ancient caves.
After picking up your tube, you will walk down to the adjacent river. This will be the spot where you finish your float. You will start the adventure by wading across the river, holding onto a rope strung across the water. From here, you will set out on a 30-minute walk along a jungle trail over loose gravel. Guests must be in good shape and able to keep up with the guide on this Belize excursion.
At the entrance of the underground cave system, your guide will hand out miner's lamps before you enter the water. You will float along on the gentle current that will take you through the cave system. Intricate crystalline formations line the cave, and the majestic rise and fall of stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene opulence of nature. The floating part of the adventure lasts approximately two hours, depending on the current, and brings you back to the starting location of your Belize excursion.
After the float, walk back up to the transportation for the drive to the pier.
Please Note: As the river bottom is rocky, you must wear shoes (sneakers or water shoes) while tubing, and they will get wet. Do not forget a towel and dry shoes for after the tour. Guests with special dietary requirements may need to bring a snack or power bar, as the tour duration is five hours. Guests must be a minimum age of 8 years old and 48" in height. There you will be greeted upon arrival by your tour guide, who will then transfer you on a private air-conditioned vehicle to Caves Branch, your cave tubing and zip-lining destination. Both adventures involve a short hike uphill on a man-made path, each to different locations in the area.
