Actun Tunichil Muknal (the Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre), also known locally as ATM, is a cave near San Ignacio, Cayo District, notable as a Maya archaeological site that includes ... moreskeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. There are several areas with skeletal remains in the main chamber.

Many of the Maya artifacts and remains are completely calcified to the cave floor. The ceramics at the site are significant partly because they are marked with “kill holes”, which indicate that they were used for ceremonial purposes. One artifact, named the “Monkey Pot”, is one of just four of its type found in Central America. The Maya also modified cave formations here, in some instances to create altars for the offerings, in others to create silhouettes of faces and animals or to project a shadow image into the cave. The cave is extensively decorated with cave formations in the upper passages.

Actun Tunichil Muknal cave was first entered by the Mayas in AD 300-600. It was not until the late AD 700-900 that the Mayas went deeper into the cave to perform their ceremonies. The cave was officially opened to the public in 1998.

The cave houses various types of artifacts from ceramics and stoneware to the remains of skeletons. The Mayas consider Actun Tunichil Muknal a highly sacred location, enclosing the famous “Crystal Maiden,” who was thought to be a sacrifice victim. After decades of weathering and natural processes, the surface of the skeleton appears to be covered with a geological sanded finish, which gives the maiden a somewhat magical fairy-dust appearance.

Cave Tubing and Zip-lining combined on the same day is the most popular excursion in Belize and it is our specialty. Our guides are very professional and they are very knowledgeable. ... moreBoth tours are great and full of fun. Guided by our experienced Belizean tour guides, you will hike for about 30 minutes through the Belizean rainforest then tube down the refreshing Caves Branch River and through spectacular cave systems, which the ancient Mayas regarded as sacred underworld and home to many powerful gods. We are happy to say that we have a new zipline designed especially for you to have the most memorable time possible in Belize. This is the second one we have constructed ourselves, this one on our own property. We have improved on everything we have learned from all others before! It is a Belizean-owned and operated enterprise. It even runs across the Cave’s Branch River. This is the most unique zipline experience in Belize! We currently have 6 platforms and 5 zip spans. We are planning more zips and a suspension bridge.
After a short, approximately 8-minute hike, we arrive at the first platform. The initial zip is a trial run. We call it the Chicken Run in case you chicken out.

Would you like to experience The Spirit of the Natural Adventure? That is our goal here at cavetubing.bz. My tour company is Vital Nature and Mayan Tours, Ltd., and we offer tours ... morefor almost all attractions on the mainland. Cave tubing is my specialty and my favorite.
Belize is one of the few places in the world to offer cave tubing, and it is the most popular tour available for guests. Many say the cave tubing tour with our company was the best tour on their vacation. And we want to stress that safety is high on our priority list for our cave tubing trips. One of the interesting things about cave tubing is found in Mayan mythology. The Mayas considered caves as the entrance to the underworld, called Xibalba. Roughly translated it means “Place of fear” and it was like their “hell”. So when you finish cave tubing you can say “I’ve been to hell and back!” We provide a private guide for your group and we avoid crowds :)

Fun and long day.
The guide, Raymond, was on time picking us up at the hotel. Quite friendly and entertaining as you would expect. The ruins was a nice outing if not a little rushed. Good information. The drive out is a bit of a haul. But hey, you get to see Gautama from the top of the pyramid, so there’s that. We picked up our second guide for the river/cave float. He was also quite entertaining. The walk to the top ... more of the float wasn’t bad at all, crossing the river on foot three times. Fun. The actual cave experience was also very enjoyable. Great experience if you haven’t done something like this before. It was a long day. Started at 9:00, returned by 5:00. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience
One of the things we were most looking forward to on our Belize trip was the cave tubing and exploring a Mayan ruin. Carlos was our guide and did a fantastic job explaining the history of the site. He did a great job throughout the tubing as well and with his knowledge of the river in some of the newer areas we never felt unsafe. He was also had great conversation throughout the 2 hour drive to the ... more ruins and back.

Cave Tubing
What an amazing experience. I kept holding up our small group because of a foot injury that I had before the trip. Our 2 guides, named Junior and Junior were great. They stopped often for me and gave us detailed stories and facts about the plant's and animals we were seeing along the way. The caves were amazing! Beautiful formations, crystals and colors. Thanks, guys. It was well worth the money.

Great fun and adventure all day tour
Our guide was the owner Luis who was very informative. Ride was comfortable and due to the many locations and destination most of the day is in the van. Our three excursions were a lot of fun. The ruin was impressive and Luis had a lot of history on buildings and locations. The zip line I felt was a bit of a let down as an adrenaline junkie but my daughter did it for her first time and that was the ... more favorite part of her trip. I don't believe any of the other zip line areas in the country are any better, just limited by the hill terrain. The cave tubing was my personal favorite. Something I have never experienced before and enjoyed a lot. Would recommend this company to anyone. Communication was great and worked with us every step of the way.
