The Belize Zoo is a zoo in Belize, located some 29 miles (47 km) west of Belize City on the George Price Highway. Set on 29 acres (12 ha), the zoo was founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola. ... moreIt is home to more than 125 animals of about 48 species, all native to Belize.

The natural environment of Belize is left entirely intact within the zoo. The dense, natural vegetation is separated only by gravel trails through the forest. The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center received almost 15,000 schoolchildren every year. The Belize Zoo focuses on educating visitors about the wildlife of Belize through encountering the animals in their natural habitat.

The aim is to instill appreciation and pride, and a desire to protect and conserve Belize’s natural resources. The Zoo was the recipient of the Belize Tourism Board’s 9th National Tourism Award, “Educational Award of the Year” in 2009.

Howler monkeys are found only in the rainforests of the Americas. They are the largest monkey in Latin American rainforests growing as high as up to three feet tall when standing and weighing from eight to twenty-two pounds. They have big necks and lower jaws, where their super-sized vocal cords are housed. They live high in the trees and hang from branches by their tails. To mark their territory, the howlers make loud vocalizations.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is located off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye. Mayan for '' little channel''. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is undoubtfully one of the most popular dive sites ... morein the Caribbean, and indeed in Belize. The entire reserve focuses on a cut through the reef ( called a Quebrada ) which is little more than 25 yards wide and 30 feet deep about 04 miles southeast of San Pedro. Hole Chan has burgeoned into a unique refuge, with vigorous coral formations and richness of marine life. Realizing the importance of the coral reef community off Ambergris Caye, Belize, the Government of Belize established the Hole Chan Marine Reserve on May 02. 1987. Shark Ray Alley was officially declared Zone ''D'' of the Hole Chan Marine Reserve on August 31st,1999.

We will then head to the neighboring Shark Ray Alley, where you will snorkel or dive and be able to get up close and personal with ecstatic Nurse Sharks and Southern Stingray. When you arrive, you will see the surface often boiling with rolling sharks and stingrays as they compete for the scraps. these creatures have a great tolerance for divers and snorkelers. The rays, which have a 'wing span' of two to four feet, swim directly towards the divers, mouths often turned up hoping for a handheld tad bit to be placed near their mouths. The docile Nurse sharks average four feet in length and can be a bit more aggressive than the stingrays. Here you will feel the excitement and novelty of swimming with a large number of sharks and stingrays.

The ATM Cave is a "must do" tour experience- and it's easily accessible!! The tour starts with a 45-minute hike through the jungle in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. It is a great ... moreway to soak in the majesty of the surrounding jungle. You will cross three rivers as you wind your way through the jungle to the mouth of the cave. The tour duration is approximately 3 hours. Bring along a change of clothes as you will be completely wet by the time the tour is over. Understanding why this cave was of such sacred importance to the Mayas requires an understanding of their spirituality. In the Maya religion, the gods of agriculture, rain, and fertility were believed to reside in the underworld. It would only seem natural that the ATM Cave, with its seemingly endless pits, would be seen as a potential gateway to the underworld. By making human sacrifices within the cave, they could appeal to these important gods practically at their front door.

Guests should dress as if preparing for a hike, bringing comfortable clothes and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Bear in mind that no cameras are allowed within the cave. The prohibition of cameras prevents damage to remaining skeletons and artifacts and preserves ATM for future generations.
