Description
Day 1: Welcome to BelizeOnce you arrive in Belize City, our guide will meet and welcome you. Then travel through beautiful landscapes as you head south to Punta Gorda in the Toledo District. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay in accommodation overlooking the ocean.
Day 2: East Indian CultureExplore the coastal fishing town of Punta Gorda, starting the day with a kayaking tour along a local mangrove creek, looking for birds and other wildlife. Then, explore the town and markets, before stopping for a traditional local lunch in a small diner. In the afternoon, learn the history of the East Indian culture in Belize, with an interactive demonstration and cooking class, before enjoying the fruits of your labour with a rooftop dinner overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
Day 3: Garifuna CultureTake a boat trip to the southernmost coastal town of Barranco, a small Garifuna village where inhabitants mainly fish and farm the surrounding land. Take a tour of the vilage, stopping in the museum to see artefacts and learn more about the history of the Garifuna in Belize. You will also visit the spiritual centre, and enjoy some traditional drumming and dancing. Eat traditional Garifuna hudut, a coconut fish soup with mashed plantain - a real favourite in Belize!
Day 4: Maya CultureLearn about the ancient Maya cilvilization with a guided tour at Nim Li Punit archeological site to start the day. Next, visit a local Maya Womens group and learn more about the traditional way of life that families still practice today. Learn crafts, dance, and how to prepare locally grown foods, and enjoy a traditional lunch. Finally, visit a cacao farm and learn the ancient Maya art of chocolate making.
Day 5: Creole CultureTake a boat trip north to Monkey River, a beautiful river where you can see exotic birds, iguanas and even crocodiles, and walk the Howler Monkey Trail to see some of Belize's most charasmatic inhabitants! Travel back down the coast to the village of Punta Negra, where you will learn the many uses and benefits of fresh coconut, as you learn how to make natural coconut oil on the beach. After a fresh seafood lunch prepared in traditional Creole style, enjoy an afternoon of snorkeling in the local marine reserve.
Day 6: Mestizo CultureLearn about colourful Mestizo crafts and cooking during this morning tour and lunch activity. In the afternoon, cool off in the refreshing waterfall at Rio Blanco National Park. As a final cultural treat, we will revisit the Creole culture this evening, with a Creole drum lesson and dinner in the jungle cooked over a traditional firehearth.
