Get acquainted with the wildlife of the Belize jungles at the Belize Zoo. All our animals have a unique story of either being orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated, or sent to us as donations from other zoological institutions. The zoo's primary mission is centered around wildlife conservation. The four primary goals of the Zoo are to enhance Education, Conservation, Research, and Recreation for the people of Belize.

Nocturnal Jungle Experience of the Best little Zoo in the World, The Belize Zoo🦉! The Belize Zoo at Night is an opportunity to take a walk on the wild side by being fully immersed ... moreinto a nocturnal, jungle environment. Even those who have seen the Belize Zoo during the day will be impressed by the ambient transformation that happens when the sun sets.

Certain species at the Belize Zoo, such as jaguars, tapirs, and ocelots may be encountered during the day, but are much more energetic and interactive after sunset. Other species such as the paca (gibnut), kinkajou, and several species of owls, are only encountered at night. 

Guests are taken on an after-hours tour of the Zoo by a highly knowledgeable Zookeeper, and, using skillfully aimed flashlights, will be introduced to over a dozen native “creatures of the night.” The nocturnal tour runs for an hour and a half and typically starts at 7pm, an earlier start can be arranged. 

Tour cost: $US100.00 for up to 4 persons, each additional person is $US20 up to 10 pax maximum.

About the Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo was started in 1983 by Sharon Matola, as a last-ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests.

Shortly after the backyard "zoo" began, it was quickly realized that its Belizean visitors were unfamiliar with the different species of wildlife which shared their country. This very aspect fomented the commitment to develop the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center.

Today, The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center exhibits over 150 animals, representing over 45 native species. The Zoo keeps animals that were orphaned, rescued, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as donations from other zoological institutions.
