Shipyard, also known as Shipyard Colony, is a Mennonite village that acts as an administrative village in the Orange Walk District. It was founded by Old Colony Mennonites from the Chihuahua and Durango states in Mexico in 1958. Most of the population of Shipyard are Plautdietsch speaking ethnic Mennonites. Individuals in the community survive mainly as carpenters, farmers and mechanics. Most Mennonites of Shipyard are quite traditional in lifestyle, still using horse and buggy for transportation and tractors with steel wheels for fieldwork.
