Journey to Kalipuna Cultural Heritage Island, a living Garifuna cultural experience created to respectfully and dignifiably celebrate the history, resilience, ancestral knowledge, ... morespirituality, and identity of Belize’s Afro-Indigenous Garifuna people. More than a traditional museum, Kalipuna has been intentionally developed as a living Garifuna village where guests can experience the connection between culture, nature, and everyday life in real time. As you explore the island, discover how generations of Garifuna people have sustained themselves through farming, fishing, traditional food preparation, medicinal plants, and responsible use of the land and surrounding waterways, while learning how these practices are deeply connected to community, spirituality, self-reliance, and respect for the ancestors. Walk through an environment where agricultural traditions, local plants, food crops, fishing knowledge, cultural displays, and storytelling reveal a way of life built around living in balance with nature. Depending on the season and natural availability, guests may also enjoy tastings of locally grown fruits, plants, herbs, and traditional foods, creating an opportunity to experience Garifuna heritage through taste as well as sight and story. Throughout the tour, knowledge is shared from a Garifuna perspective, allowing visitors to move beyond simply observing the culture and instead understand the values, ingenuity, strength, and ancestral wisdom that have enabled the Garifuna people to preserve their identity across generations. Created through years of hard work, love, and purpose, Kalipuna stands as a powerful expression of Garifuna dignity, cultural pride, sustainability, self-determination, and continuity—a place where ancestral knowledge is honored, living heritage is celebrated, and visitors leave with a deeper appreciation of what it means for a culture not merely to survive, but to live, grow, and shape its own future.
