Operated mainly as a fishing island through its early years, the Sabals have worked to build the island up over the past fifteen years to invite tourism. Billy Hawk Caye as we know it is the only Garifuna cultural island in Belize and possibly in the world which is yet still true to their roots. This island paradise is conveniently located fourteen miles southeast of the culture capital Dangriga town, and nine miles east of Hopkins village. Alex and his sister, Jackie along with their extended family spends a good portion of their years on the island, still fishing when not entertaining guests.
Included in your visit is also the opportunity to spend time learning to fish as the local Belizeans with hand line. When in season, you can join in the hunt for lobster or conch, learn how to clean your conch and also help Jackie prepare your fresh sea food meal. Seagrapes Cabana is a purpose built one bedroom private building on our property by the beach. There is a kitchen/ Lounge space with a gas cooker/oven, upright fridge freezer, and double sink, with fitted cupboards in the kitchen area. There is a small sofa in the living area which also converts to a small bed. The bedroom has a double bed and a small air-condition unit. The cabana also benefits from ceiling fans and has wifi. The french doors lead onto a verandah where you can sit and enjoy watching all the birds that stop by our yard, with the beach and sea just a few yards away from your front door.
