US Embassy Belize Health Alert

By 3/17/2020

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to reconsider travel abroad due to the global impact of COVID-19.  Many areas throughout the world are now experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and taking action that may limit traveler mobility, including quarantines and border restrictions. Even countries or areas where cases have not been reported may restrict travel without notice.

On March 14, the Department of State authorized the departure from any diplomatic or consular post in the world of U.S. personnel and family members who have been medically determined to be at higher risk of a poor outcome if exposed to COVID-19.

The government of Belize has implemented enhanced screening and quarantine measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

  • All travelers who have traveled within the last 30 days from China, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, South Korea, and Europe (including the United Kingdom) will be prohibited entry into Belize. This restricted travel list of countries will be continuously monitored and updated as necessary.

  • American citizens arriving from areas where community infection and spread is present will be placed under self-isolation upon arrival and expected to follow the protocols of the Ministry of Health. At this time the government of Belize has not released a list of those areas or communities.

  • Cruise ship calls to Belize have been suspended.

  • All border checkpoints into Belize will be closed except Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City and the northern border between Corozal and Chetumal, Mexico. Cargo traffic is not affected by border closures.

  • Schools in Belize will be closed after Friday March 20, 2020 and will not re-open before Monday April 20, 2020.

Effective March 16, 2020 the US Embassy in Belmopan has suspended routine Nonimmigrant and Immigrant visa services. We are still providing all American Citizens Services, including emergency passports, please visit our website for additional information https://bz.usembassy.gov/ .

All travelers should be prepared for additional travel restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice. Visit the website of the Belize Ministry of Health http://health.gov.bz/www/ for additional information on these new measures.
