This is a sleeping giant waiting to be wakened by the slow discovering of more archeological evidence. Few ancient cities were brave to rise up and fight against one of the giants ... moreof the Maya world, Tikal. Yaxche is found approximately 45 minutes from Belize´s western border.
This site gives us an opportunity to enjoy a sunset tour from the top of one of its tallest buildings. Seeing the sunset over the horizon being framed by the lake on the western side of the city is spectacular. You have the option of seeing the sunset and coming back to San Ignacio for dinner or we can stay and have dinner at a restaurant near the site.

A few years ago ¨SURVIVOR¨ was shot at Yaxha and on a little island called Topoxte and since then it grew in popularity.

NOTE: Departure Tax at the Belize Border $20.00USD ($40BZD) per person.

Located across the Belize/Guatemala border, Yaxha (blue/green – water) has 500 buildings on 3 sq. kilometers. It was inhabited from 800 BC. to 1450 AD. and is located on a slope overlooking ... morea major lake of the same name. From the top of its temples, the view is water or jungle to the horizon, a view so unique since the Maya never built their cities near water. Yaxha is better than Caracol in architecture, setting, and wildlife, plus you don’t need to go on a dirt road for 2 1/2 hrs each way. It is one of the undiscovered sites, no crowds, less driving, and flat walking. This is an excellent jungle setting for wildlife and culture. What to experience a beautiful sunset? Depart at 1:00 pm to stay and watch the sunset from the top of the highest temple with a complimentary glass of wine!
