Xunantunich is a Mayan ceremonial center sitting at the peak of a mountain just a bit less than a mile from the Mopan River, which has to be crossed on a hand-cranked ferry to continue ... morethe journey to the ruins. Altun Ha is an ancient Mayan City about 30 miles north of Belize City, dating back to about B.C. 900. The name Altun Ha means “Rockstone Water”, and it is derived from the name of a nearby village called Rockstone Pond, but Altun-Ha’s ancient name remains unknown. Tubing through Belize's unique underground cave system is the must-do tour in Belize. After meeting your Belize guide, you will walk to your air-conditioned transportation for the ... moreapproximately one-hour drive to the Caves Branch River and its winding path through the Mayan Mountains and numerous ancient caves.
After picking up your tube, you will walk down to the adjacent river. This will be the spot where you finish your float. You will start the adventure by wading across the river, holding onto a rope strung across the water. From here, you will set out on a 30-minute walk along a jungle trail over loose gravel. Guests must be in good shape and able to keep up with the guide on this Belize excursion.
At the entrance of the underground cave system, your guide will hand out miner's lamps before you enter the water. You will float along on the gentle current that will take you through the cave system. Intricate crystalline formations line the cave, and the majestic rise and fall of stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene opulence of nature. The floating part of the adventure lasts approximately two hours, depending on the current, and brings you back to the starting location of your Belize excursion.
After the float, walk back up to the transportation for the drive to the pier.
Please Note: As the river bottom is rocky, you must wear shoes (sneakers or water shoes) while tubing, and they will get wet. Do not forget a towel and dry shoes for after the tour. Guests with special dietary requirements may need to bring a snack or power bar, as the tour duration is five hours. Guests must be a minimum age of 8 years old and 48" in height.
