The 7 Best Belize Beach Destinations to Visit in 2023

By 12/30/2022 3 minutes

We’re not sure how many beaches scientists visited to reach the universal conclusion that beaches do more for a person’s mental well-being than hours on a psychiatry couch, but when Christine Heiser explored the benefits of beaches for NBC News, her findings were conclusive.

Beaches not only make people feel better and calmer but the psychological benefits of vacationing near beaches are endless. From the color blue (it changes brain waves) to the sound of waves lulling beach dwellers into states of tranquility, beaches are just what the doctor ordered.

The smartest doctors recommend Belize beaches. Belize has a disproportionate number of beaches in relation to its landmass, so it can be hard to pick just one. We’ve chosen 7 to recommend, but if you’re eager to unwind, perhaps you should visit them all. Even if you're staying at one of the many famouse Belize beach resorts, you still don't want to miss these other amazing beaches in Belize.
  1. South Water Caye. How does the idea of playing in the surf on a beach surrounded by a nature preserve sound? South Water Caye’s reputation for being the place Mother Nature and the sustainability movement meet makes South Water Caye a must-visit beach—especially if you want excellent access to the Belize Barrier Reef.

  2. Goff’s Caye. Some travel writers call Goff's Caye beach stunning. Others rave about the privacy visitors enjoy when making the short trek from nearby Belize City. Relax on a beach that hugs water so shallow, you must wade in a distance to get your swimsuit wet. Bring snorkel/diving gear or rent it during your stay on this little island in the sun.

  3. Silk Caye. What Silk Caye beaches lack in resorts (there are none) it makes up in character. Snorkeling here is sensational--especially if you’ve been longing to spot nurse sharks and stingrays up close and personal. Tour operators are happy to break up your sunbathing time with private or group sailing, snorkeling and diving excursions, returning you to your blanket in-between adventures.

  4. Hopkins. Hopkins beaches offer tourists more than sea, surf and sand. Hopkins remains a well-kept secret despite the fact that frequent visitors say it's the friendliest village in the nation. In addition to soaking up sun, explore Garifuna culture and make a Cockscomb Basin pilgrimage to round out a perfect sojourn.

  5. Ambergris Caye. Ambergris Caye beaches hug the coast of Belize’s social hot spot. Sun worshippers are highly respected along this 25-mile-long stretch, so hang a “Do not disturb” sign from your bikini strings and nobody will bother you. When nature calls, trips to Shark Ray Alley, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, the Belize Reef and the Great Blue Hole make super diversions.

Don't forget to make your way to Secret Beach, a not-so-hidden beach located on the leeward side of the island a few miles north of San Pedro town. It's a bit off the beaten path, but once you're there you'll be glad you went. You'll need a golf cart to get there. Taxi rides are available, but it can be more expensive than renting a cart for the day. To read all about Secret Beach, check out this blog.

  6. Caye Caulker. Take the Belize City water taxi to reach Caye Caulker Beach. Once you arrive, don’t look for cars. There are none. Snorkel, read, contemplate your life and nap in the sun. Escape to the Lazy Lizard for the 6-beer bucket followed by a $4.50 meal at Syd’s.

  7. Placencia. Placencia's beachfront is 16 miles long and every foot of sand- and sun-drenched surface can lull you into a state of bliss. Running adjacent to the pedestrian boardwalk called “the world’s narrowest main street,” you can take sun and surf breaks any time you like to shop, dine or snag souvenirs for your envious friends.

Can you have it all? Of course. All 7 beaches invite your inspection, though the number you visit obviously depends upon the amount of time you have during your Belize stay. One of the best ways to maximize that time is by allowing Belizing.com to sort out your Belize itinerary.
