About Location
Burrell Boom is tranquil and charming village that lies on the Belize River, twenty miles above Belize City. This village was founded in the 18th century. Its name is taken from the iron chains, "booms," that loggers would extended across the river to trap the mahogany logs that were sent from further upriver. Today, you can still see the chains and anchors displayed in the Burrell Boom Park. This historic village is passed by visitors that are on their way to the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge The conception of the competition started back in 1998 as local business owner and investor, Richard Harrison, was thinking of a way to promote ... morea new brand of bottled water in Belize – VIDA Purified Water. Through this, Mr. Harrison was able to compose a committee for the event along with additional sponsors. Although the initial purpose was commercial, it was later advocated towards raising awareness about Belize’s environment and the history of the Belize River.

Since then, the La Ruta Maya River Challenge has been a popular annual event in households and to an international scale. It is the longest canoe race in Central America.
