About Location
A haven for the endangered jaguar, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary covers 128,000 acres of rainforest in the Cockscomb Range of the Maya Mountains. With the neighboring Bladen Nature Reserve to the south, jaguars have a combined 250,000 acres to roam free of worry from poachers. This haven makes Belize the most jaguar-populated country in the world.

Want to get a glimpse of a jaguar? The best way for a chance to see one is by going on an evening guided tour. If night hiking and giant predators are not for you, there are plenty of animals to see during the day, including pumas, margays, ocelots, kajous, deer, peccaries, and tapirs. Not to mention birds, Cockscomb has over 300 different species at any given time, including Keel-Billed Toucan, King Vulture, several hawk species, and scarlet macaws. As a side note, Cockscomb is also home to several bugs and insects, so be sure to bring bug spray and long clothing.

For people that love to hike, love a good view, and enjoy a nice dip at the foot of a waterfall, this may just be the adventure for you. This hike takes approximately 1.5 hours to ... moreget to the waterfall. You would need to endure steep hills/steps and about 1 hour into the hike, there is a viewing point that puts you above the canopy and allows a perfect view of the tallest peak in Belize (Victoria Peak). After enjoying that breath-taking view, the hike resumes, heading along the hills towards the waterfalls. Once at the bottom and the waterfall is visible, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment. The hike is still not over, as a short walk going over the first waterfall brings you to the second and larger waterfall. Now you can relax, swim, reminisce and bask in the beauty and peaceful nature of the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve.

The Cockscomb Mayan Adventure Tour The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1990 is world renowned for being the first jaguar reserve. This "one of a kind" nature park ... morewas established as a result of jaguar studies conducted in the area by Alan Rabinowitz (aka “The Indiana Jones of Wildlife Protection”). Besides being the home to Belize's largest cat, the sanctuary protects the headwaters of two major river systems and supports an abundance of hardwood vegetation and a diverse faunal assemblage. Over 128,000 acres of the lush jungle is ringed by the spectacular Cockscomb Mountains.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to all five (5) of Belize's cats: Jaguar, Puma, Margay, Jaguarundi, and Ocelot. It is estimated that over 80 resident Jaguars are in the area. Belize's national animal, the endangered Baird's Tapir also inhabits the Basin and over 290 different species of birds have been recorded. This tour is ideal for nature lovers and intrepid travelers.

Amazing Rock Sliding Experience
My boyfriend and I signed up for a hike and rock sliding at the Jaguar Cockscomb Reserve and had the best time ever. Our guide, Jimmy, was super knowledgeable about the plants and small wildlife that we saw on our trip. The rock sliding was the cherry on top of an awesome day out. Would highly recommend to a friend!

Fan bloody tastic
Well, we couldn't have had a better day with Jimmy at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. His commitment to ensuring clients have a great day is second to none. His knowledge of all things Belize is amazing. His appreciation of energetic clients is gratifying. If you love getting in the thick of it this is the tour for you. There are no guarantees with finding any wildlife (except maybe the Amazonian ... more Kingfisher) but that's part of the fun. It doesn't even matter what the weather will be like as the humidity means you will be wet. We were just on the borderline with the river tubing and the rock sliding was exhilarating. Go with your eyes open and you will have an amazing time. Jimmy was impressed that I identified a nutmeg with it's mace coat (not off the supermarket shelf.)

COCKSCOMB BASIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY tour in October
Jimmy and Victor were dynamic tour guides. Jimmy was very knowledgeable in Belize History and Victor was our personal nature guide. Before heading to Belize in October, we have our fears about the weather interfering with booking excursions. Even though we were not able to go river tubing due to the water levels being too high, they did their best to accommodate the change and we went rock sliding ... more instead. Rock sliding was an amazing experience. Another perk about traveling to Placencia Belize in October is that it’s the slow season and we were able to experience a private personal tour. We had a group of 4 and 2 tour guides. From the moment Jimmy picked us up to the moment he dropped us off, we learned so much about the country and the rain forest that you won’t be able to get just doing research alone. I highly recommended booking this excursion early on during your vacation because this allowed us to appreciate and understand the culture during the rest of our stay. Jimmy and Victor were awesome and Placencia Belize is such a natural and beautiful Country. There was so much more to explore but we didn’t have enough time to get to them all. We will definitely be back to book other excursion with you.
