Costa Maya International Festival
The Costa Maya International Festival has grown to be one of Belize’s largest and most anticipated cultural events. Annually, it is held in the Town of San Pedro in August. This celebration is a three-day event, usually held on at the end of a week, that comprises of live music and entertainment, cultural performances from the region’s top acts, traditional and fusion cuisines and treats, games, and the infamous Miss Costa Maya International pageant. The goal of the festival is to continue promoting the culture of the Mundo Maya countries with their folklore dances, music, and food, while promoting tourism in the island of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
The festival kicks off with the election and coronation of Miss Costa Maya International. Contestants from all over Central America, where the Maya population once thrived, compete for the coveted title and crown. After the crowning, officials and foreign diplomats formally announce the opening of the Costa Maya Festival.
The celebrations carry on for the weekend with seafood cookouts, mechanical rides, games, football marathons, parades, and international musical presentations. There is a cultural event of “Noche International,” where some of the top bands in the Latino world perform on stage. The Costa Maya Festival traditionally concludes with other cultural shows, live music and entertainment, food, and dances from participating countries.

We depart later to let you sleep in, avoid the crowds, and see the sunset at the end of the tour. We start with snorkeling at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. Hol Chan has the largest variety of species to be seen in the area and is often compared to an aquarium, while at Shark Ray Alley you get to experience a close encounter with nurse sharks and stingrays. Watch from the boat or swim with them! We then serve our famous Belizean buffet lunch on board. Traditional dishes like stewed chicken and rice and beans with our Captain’s secret recipe BBQ fish! After lunch, we stop at the neighboring island Caye Caulker for approx. 1 hour of free time to explore the island, followed by a relaxed sunset cruise back to San Pedro, with ceviche served. Six miles north of San Pedro Town in North Ambergris Caye, you will find one of the most beautiful snorkel sites known as Mexico Rocks & Tres Cocos. Unlike many of the snorkeling ... morespots in Belize that are right on the barrier reef, Mexico Rocks & Tres Cocos is a star coral patch that is located in the shallow waters midway between the great barrier reef and the island of Ambergris Caye.
Mexico Rocks are known for many conches, banded shrimps, arrow crabs, grunts, yellowtail snappers, and an assortment of Butterfly and Angelfish. Tres Cocos is named after three tall coconut trees on shore used to locate the site. The reef here gets as shallow as four feet. Here you will find the most beautiful corals, colorful species of both large and small fishes, shrimp, parrotfish, fairy basslet, sea urchins, spider crabs, lobster, and many other small critters of the sea. You will also see magnificent elk horns, sea whips, and sea rods that make good protection for juvenile fishes. The highlights of this trip are the mountains of brain coral, which grow up to 20 feet. On the sandy seabed, you might even see stingrays, eagle rays, and peacock flounder. The nurse shark is a common site as well.
Mexico Rocks & Tres Cocos is protected from ocean swells and currents, so it makes for easier snorkeling, perfect for beginners. Depth is only about 6 to 12 feet, so you can see everything up close. Water visibility in this area of the crystal clear Caribbean Sea is about 50 feet or more.

Depart Blue Tang Inn on the Sirena Azul Sailboat at 8:30 am. Sail, relax, and enjoy the aqua-blue Caribbean for about 45 minutes to Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Here, a guide will lead ... moreyou along the reef, pointing out the many interesting fish and coral formations. This beautiful, small channel contains many different schools of fish. Turtles, stingrays, groupers, horse-eyed jacks, snappers, and sergeant majors will escort you through this very scenic tour around the channel. The next stop is Shark Ray Alley, where you can snorkel with friendly Nurse sharks & southern stingrays next to the boat. Once back on board you can rinse off with fresh water and settle in for the sail to Caye Caulker. When you reach Caye Caulker you will have time to have lunch on your own & explore our quaint sister island. After lunch, enjoy a leisurely sail back to San Pedro to return by 5pm. Includes Beer, soda, rum punch, bottled water and fresh fruit. Bring a towell, sunscreen, hat and a light sweater along. Snorkel gear is available at the Blue Tang Inn office.
