The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) is the main public hospital in Belize City, Belize. It functions as both the national referral hospital, and the district hospital for Belize District. It is located on Princess Margaret Drive, next to the offices of the Belize Social Security Board. It is publicly owned and operated, and is the main hospital in the area.
KHMH came into being in 1995 to replace the Old Belize City Hospital in Belize City. Founded in 1820, the Old Belize City Hospital’s initial purpose was to provide medical services for sick and deprived seamen involved in shipping.
KHMH was formally incorporated as a statutory authority by way of the KHMH Act of 2000, which designated it as the country’s national referral hospital. Today, KHMH is the country’s flagship hospital providing tertiary care for the entire country and serving as the secondary care hospital for the Central Health Region. The hospital receives major funding from the Ministry of Health and is administered by a Board of Governors.
