Xunantunich is an Ancient Mayan archaeological site in western Belize, about 80 miles (130 km) west of Belize City, in the Cayo District. Xunantunich is located atop a ridge above ... morethe Mopan River, well within sight of the Guatemala border – which is a mere 1 kilometer (0.62 mi) to the west. It served as a Maya civic ceremonial center in the Late and Terminal Classic periods to the Belize Valley region. At this time, when the region was at its peak, nearly 200,000 people lived in Belize.

Xunantunich’s name means "Stone Woman" in the Maya language (Mopan and Yucatec combination name), and, like many names given to Maya archaeological sites, is a modern name; the ancient name is currently unknown. The "Stone Woman" refers to the ghost of a woman claimed by several people to inhabit the site, beginning in 1892. She is dressed completely in white and has fire-red glowing eyes. She generally appears in front of "El Castillo", ascends the stone stairs, and disappears into a stone wall.

Turneffe is the largest of the three atolls and the only one with an extensive cover of mangroves, featuring spectacular wall diving suitable for every level of diver. Because of its ... moreundeveloped, the atoll has an untouched marine life. Visibility is excellent, making it easy to enjoy the large school of horse-eye jacks, snapper, and permits. Turneffe Island makes the scuba diving an adventure like no other dive destination in the Caribbean. The vastness and variety of marine life and coral formations are truly unmatched.

The isolation, lack of any large-scale development and the natural attributes of the atoll make it the most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Caribbean. Sixty species of birds live or migrate through here. The water teems with dolphins and sharks and crocodiles.

But it’s the fish that most people come for.

With visibility, up to 100 feet and such a rich marine environment we were able to see spotted eagle rays slowly flapping by like birds underwater, loggerhead turtles, colorful and diverse coral formations (soft and hard), big schools of creole wrasse which flash by in a blur of black and blue, tiny snapping shrimp (which really do snap), spotted toadfish, peppermint shrimp, dancing crabs and a remora (aka suckerfish) so big it had a smaller remora attached to it and lots more.

It is a Grand Slam! Yes the fly fishman's ultimate goal! Ambergris Caye has many lagoon flats, channel cuts and mangrove inlets on the West side which provide great habitats for flat ... morefishing.

Tarpon, bonefish and permit are the catch of the day for a Grand Slam. These fish are protected by the laws of Belize and are only for catch and release. Because these fish are protected, they are abundant in our waters. This provides a great chance for the fly fisherman to get his Grand Slam!

Flat fishing is also done on a half day or full day.

Reef fishing takes you to our barrier reef which is parallel to our island. Most of the fishing is done inside the reef and is probably the most popular fishing done in Ambergris Caye ... moreas the probability to catch a fish is high. There are many spots along the reef where one can fish and usually to reef fish it is only minutes away from your hotel.

Snappers, groupers, barracudas and jacks are common fish caught on the reef. Trolling is a good way to get those barracudas or maybe some horse-eyed jacks. Also bottom fishing is done to get those medium sized snappers and groupers.

Reef Fishing also comes in two flavors, half day or full day.

Snorkeling at Hol Chan, visiting the nurse sharks and the stingrays, snorkeling with the manatees, feeding the tarpons and visiting the seahorses definitely needs a whole day. This ... moreis a full day full of Fun!
Pick up time can either be 8:00 am or 8:30 - you decide. The first stop is at Hol Chan - "Little Channel". That is our first snorkeling stop. Once completed, less than 3 minutes boat ride we get to Shark and Ray Alley. Here you can either stay on the boat and snap pictures or go in the water to SWIM with the marine species like nurse sharks, stingrays, horse-eye jacks and much more fish. We bring sardine to feed them...
After that, we move towards our sister island Caye Caulker. We head to the Northern Channel where we go look out for the manatees. Once spotted, you get on your snorkeling gears and go in to snorkel with them. So Marvelous!

We then go to the island and visit the famous "Split" which divides the island into two parts that were caused in 1961 by hurricane Hattie. On the leeward part of the island, we go to feed the big tarpons from the boat - if you are brave enough! Lol. Not too far we have the seahorse city reserve. You get to look at them. Once all of this is done, normally around 12:30 pm we go to the island to walk and find a restaurant of your choice where you will have lunch. We depart from Caye Caulker to San Pedro around 3:00 pm.
