After picking up your tube, you will walk down to the adjacent river. This will be the spot where you finish your float. You will start the adventure by wading across the river, holding onto a rope strung across the water. From here, you will set out on a 30-minute walk along a jungle trail over loose gravel. Guests must be in good shape and able to keep up with the guide on this Belize excursion.
At the entrance of the underground cave system, your guide will hand out miner's lamps before you enter the water. You will float along on the gentle current that will take you through the cave system. Intricate crystalline formations line the cave, and the majestic rise and fall of stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene opulence of nature. The floating part of the adventure lasts approximately two hours, depending on the current, and brings you back to the starting location of your Belize excursion.
After the float, walk back up to the transportation for the drive to the pier.
Please Note: As the river bottom is rocky, you must wear shoes (sneakers or water shoes) while tubing, and they will get wet. Do not forget a towel and dry shoes for after the tour. At the site:
Make use of the expansive restroom complex to change into your swimwear. Your guide then walks you over to the tube racks where you’ll pick a tube of your choice. You will be provided with life jackets, helmets, and headlamps.
Geared up, you will embark on a 45 minutes’ hike across the clear green Caves Branch River. A rope at the crossing keeps you from straying. The water is waist-deep, normally. After the river crossing, you'll hike a jungle trail heading upstream. Your guide will point out interesting aspects of the local flora & fauna as you trek through – a perfect time to take out your cameras (preferably waterproof).
After a briefing on the proper safety techniques, you'll be set afloat through a series of caverns that periodically open up to the sunshine & jungle. Your guide will occasionally point out various Maya artifacts within the crevices of the caves. It is believed the city was occupied for centuries up until A.D. 1000, covering the classic period A.D. 250-900, the time from which most of the information of this city was gathered and the time when the city was at its height.
The name Altun Ha means “Rockstone Water”, and it is derived from the name of a nearby village called Rockstone Pond, but Altun-Ha’s ancient name remains unknown. The largest temple of Altun Ha is the Temple of the Masonry Altars which stands 54 feet high. The Sun God’s Tomb is also found on this temple dated for about A.D. 600-650, in which researchers found a skeleton and various artifacts when the tomb was excavated.
