Lobster Fest is one of Belize’s biggest and most anticipated annual events. In the month of June, this event is perfect for the start of summer. Many from near and far flock to Belize’s coastal and island areas to celebrate the opening season of this loved crustacean.
In Belize, there are three official locations that participate in the annual
Lobster Fest celebrations. These three locations are San Pedro, Placencia, and Caye Caulker. Depending on where you are and your personal preference, you could choose between these three locations to experience lobster fest, or attend them all!
What to do at lobsterfest?
Lobsterfest, described by the name will be a galore of lobsters on the grill. Imagine it as a massive beach barbecue with all-you-can-eat lobster!
Lobsterfest in San Pedro
Each location has their unique itinerary to celebrate this event.
In San Pedro, the fest is celebrated for an entire week. This would include a lobster crawl that happens during the week that leads to a massive block party at Central Park.
Lobsterfest in Caye Caulker
Unlike San Pedro,
Placencia and Caye Caulker hosts a three-day event, usually on the weekend, for the lobster fest. The festivities are usually held at Palapa Gardens, Caye Caulker. Activities would include beach volleyball tournaments at The Split, beach barbecues with loads and loads of lobster, beach parties, live entertainment and a whole lot of fun under the sun!
How to get to Caye Caulker?
- San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi
- Ocean Ferry Water Taxi
- Maya Island Air
- Tropic Air
If you are not residing on the island, then getting to Caye Caulker would require you to take a water taxi or book a domestic flight.
For the
Caye Caulker Lobsterfest, we decided to attend the Saturday of the three-day event. Getting to Caye Caulker was horrific! We had never seen the line at the San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi so long before. There was at least two hundred people, minimum, waiting in line to get on a boat to Caye Caulker. Looked like everyone wanted some of the lobster action that Saturday. We didn’t manage to get on the boat that we intended to go on, so we had to wait in line for an hour before getting on the next scheduled boat.
Our experience at the Caye Caulker Lobsterfest
Our boat ride to Caye Caulker took us about an hour. It was quite relaxing and cool. We sat in an area where the sea breeze blew directly to us. Before we knew it, the boat docked at the water taxi pier. We all exited the boat and followed the music that led us to Palapa Gardens.
At Front Street, many stalls and booths were set up from
NEMO, Kaj Expressions,
Oceana and
A&S Covers, along with many food and drink vendors. Down this street, many were flocked at the booths, either learning about the companies and organizations’ promotions or indulging in the tasty dishes and lobster treats that were being sold.
Further down the street is where The Split is at. This location is well-known for beach games, water sports, swimming, snorkeling and drinking at the infamous
Lazy Lizard Bar & Grill Restaurant. Here, the island was split into two land masses by Hurricane Hattie in 1961.
Here, many visitors were enjoying the crisp, blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, kayaking and parasailing. On the beach, there was a group that was playing an invigorating game of beach volleyball. Others around the area were entertained by the volleyball match or the day’s
FIFA World Cup match.
The weather that day was perfect to be at the beach. The sun was shining bright in the blue skies and the sea was free of sargassum. Everyone out there was relishing the great weather, cold beers and, of course, the galore of grilled lobsters!
There was live entertainment from
Youth Connection Band and many local DJs. At the same concert area, was an enclosed area where Travellers Liquors’ Bartendning Competition was held. Many who were at Caye Caulker surely enjoyed all the activities and food that was offered.
As the lobster festivities have come to an end for 2018, there is always 2019 Lobster Fest that is certain to be bigger and better. Be sure to mark your calendars and let’s go Belizing at next year’s lobster fest!
