Xunantunich means “Stone Maiden” in the Maya language. Since 1892, numerous people have claimed to have seen a ghost here, dressed completely in white with red glowing eyes. Ongoing excavations have revealed that the Xunantunich Mayan ruins in Belize probably played an important role in the political power struggle of the Classical period.
It seems likely that it joined in an alliance with Caracol & Calakmul in Mexico to bring down Tikal in Guatemala.
Xunantunich stands on a flattened hilltop, overlooking the Mopan River in Belize.
There are 5 plazas on site, which were once part of this Maya civic ceremonial center.
However they are completely overshadowed by the towering El Castillo or The Castle – it’s what makes the Xunantunich Mayan ruins in San Ignacio one of the top destinations in Belize

El Pilar is a Mayan Ruin located about 7 miles from Bullet Tree Falls village in Cayo, Belize. Your expert guide will take you to this site, which is surrounded by an abundance of ... morewater sources (“pila” means “water basin” in Spanish). This site is still being excavated, and most structures are in the early stages of excavation. An interesting feature of this site is a causeway that runs along the eastern edge of the site all the way across the border of the country into Guatemala. So far, 12 pyramids and 25 plazas have been discovered at El Pilar. It is believed to have been inhabited from 500 BC to 1000 AD. Traverse the jungle on an off-road ATV, zip line along the canopy of the Rainforest, and float through the Maya underworld.
After the adrenaline rush of the zip line and jungle ATVs, we wash the mud off our clothes and take a 15-minute ride to the “No’hoch Che’en” national park. Here you will be fitted with a helmet, a headlight, a life jacket, and an appropriate flotation tube. It is a 30 – 45 minute hike to the entrance of the caves. Once we reach the entrance you will board your floating tube and be navigated through the underworld by one of our experienced guides.
In the caves, you will see eagles, turtles, mammoths, sharks, jellyfish, Indiana Jones, and even Darth Vader. Once we exit the caves you will continue down the lazy river for another 15 minutes right back to the starting point of the tour.
Once we are back to the land of the living you will enjoy a delicious meal before we take the ride back to your drop-off point. Along the way, we will share experiences, highlights, a local rum cocktail, or just take advantage of the free time with a siesta. Most guests prefer the siesta.

Caracol is the largest Maya archaeological site in Belize. In AD 650, the urban area of Caracol had a radius of approximately 10 kilometers around the center of the site. Caracol maintained a population of over 140,000 people through the creation of an immense agricultural field system and through elaborate city planning. Caracol is noted not only for its size during the Maya Classic era (A.D. 250-950) but also for its prowess in war; this includes an AD 562 defeat of Tikal and the subsequent conquest of Naranjo.
