Located in the village of San Jose Succotz, Xunantunich "maiden of the rock", is one of the most popular sites in Belize. We start off at the Mopan River where we cross the river via ... morea hand-cranked ferry and ride uphill for a mile on a paved road. This was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period. The center is composed of six major plazas surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. The site is a late classic period 600 AD to 900 AD which also was the borderline influence of El Naranjo- a large ceremonial site over in Guatemala. The large pyramid, “El Castillo”, is well known for the frieze or band of stucco decoration which at one time extended around the entire temple. El Castillo rises l30 feet above the main plaza; is the second tallest structure in Belize and offers an impressive panoramic view of the Mopan River valley, the border town of Benque Viejo (Belize), and neighboring Melchor de Mencos (Guatemala). Just being here and appreciating this view makes it totally worth the effort!

Crystal Cave Tour Locally known as the Mountain Cow Cave, this stunning, other-worldly Crystal Cave is located deep in the jungle, in the heart of the Blue Hole National Park, along ... morewith the scenic Hummingbird Highway. We leave San Ignacio in the morning and head towards Belmopan, we pass the capital city and proceed along the scenic Hummingbird Highway, crossing green mountains, passing fragrant orange orchards, pineapple plantations, and rainforest-draped valleys along the way. The Blue Hole National Park is a picturesque and easily accessible protected area managed by the Belize Audubon Society.

After a 50-minute hike through the tropical forest, we reach the cave entrance, where we rappel 15 feet into the cavernous entrance to the cave. We will traverse through the large chambers of the cave, sliding down mud ramps and scrambling along rocks. This is a challenging descent into Xibalba, the Mayan realm of the underworld. Your guide will show you the shimmering formations in the cave, along with artifacts and the skeletal remains of sacrificial victims from the time of the ancient Maya. We will witness the remnants of the past as we discover centuries-old fire pits, wall carvings, pottery, and other relics, as well as impressive crystal formations and stalactites and stalagmites.

This tour is physically demanding but well worth the effort as we walk in the footsteps of the Mayan ritual leaders and see the evidence of their ceremonies with our own eyes. After our cave exploration, you can take time to eat a hearty homemade lunch, enjoy a refreshing soft drink and swim in the vibrant waters of the Blue Hole, an inland cenote (a deep sinkhole that is filled with rain and spring water). Come to feel the thrill!

Located deep within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, in the Maya Mountains, Caracol is the largest known Maya site in Belize and one of the biggest in the Maya world. While traveling ... moreto this location, you will enjoy the stunning scenery of the flora and fauna that enhance the true beauty of this magnificent Maya City. Here, you will be given a lifetime experience as you trail along paths that were once threaded by nobles and peasants that lived in this mystic world. Archeological discoveries have revealed that Caracol had an urban area approximately 10 kilometers in a radius around the center of the city, in the year 650 AD. At its peak, Caracol's epicenter, or town, housed about 15,000 people. Caracol. Caana (meaning sky palace), the main pyramid at Caracol, houses 4 palaces and 3 temples and remains the tallest building in modern Belize, with an impressive height of approximately 141 feet. Caracol is a world in which the gods demanded ceremonies and rituals.

This is a waterfall lover's dream! There are 3 waterfalls on this trip: The unnamed waterfalls, the Rio Frio Waterfall, and the Twin Waterfalls. These beautiful waterfalls are located ... moreup in the Vaca Reserve which is about 8.5 miles on the Hydro Road which is about one hour drive from downtown San Ignacio. This is my favorite place in Belize!!

From the time you get on the pontoon boat on your way to the waterfalls, you will be engulfed by the beautiful scenery of the river gorge. While enjoying the scenery we travel slowly on the river bank trying to find some wildlife. Some days we see a lot, and some days we don’t see anything. Hence the reason I do not guarantee wildlife but the great adventure, scenery, and waterfalls will always be there. However, you will see images of the wildlife we encounter on the trip many times, however, the wildlife is not guaranteed as it is not a zoo.

You can get to the location where the pontoon boat is waiting for us in two ways. One, you drive all the way down to the river bank. Two, you can hike the recently built trails that pass through the jungle while learning about some of the traditional edible and healing plants that were used and are still used by the Mayas.
