Actun Tunichil Muknal or simple ATM is one of the most popular Mayan burial sites in Belize. The cave contains four skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware left by the Maya. The most famous ... moreskeleton is that of a young girl, the bones of which have been completely covered by the natural processes of the cave, leaving them with a sparkling appearance. The cave itself is several kilometers long with several chambers. Once inside the cave, you will spend several hours swimming, climbing, and exploring.

The hike from the starting point to the cave entrance includes three stream crossings and passes through the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. The hike through the lower portion of the cave is approximately 45 minutes in duration. Once through the inner chambers, you will ascend to the upper chambers, and to do this you will be required to take off your shoes and explore in only your socks to prevent damage to the artifacts. This adventure is challenging and a good level of physical fitness is required. The ability to swim is a plus as you will need to cross deep water to enter the cave and will be wading through water several times both inside and outside the caves.

At the furthest end of the upper chambers, you will encounter the “crystal maiden”. Cameras are not allowed in the cave for conservation purposes.

Good Trip but With Some Bumps
Overall, we really enjoyed our trip to Tikal. Crossing the border was easy and our guide in Guatemala was there to meet us. He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the history of Tikal as well as being good at identifying the birds and wildlife we saw. There was a balanced amount of time with the guide and on our own at Tikal. It was an impressive site, and I’m so glad we decided to visit. ... more However, there were a few issues. First, our Belizing driver was 30 minutes late to pick us up. In his defense, while the directions we gave him were correct (and came directly from the owner of our Airbnb), one of the street names was wrong. However, I had also contacted the company and given them the accurate address with the accurate street name. When he arrived, he complained to us that he had been driving around looking for us for 1 hour. That didn’t make any sense, and if he had followed the directions at all, or used the address I gave, he would have found us as we were standing outside our Airbnb the whole time. His complaining set an unpleasant tone. Later that day, after crossing the border from Guatemala back to Belize our driver was not there waiting for us. He was more than 20 minutes late picking us up. In my email to the company, they apologized for his delay and referenced “the construction delay on the George Price Highway” but given another recent review, it seems like this may be a pattern. The only other disappointment was that when we sat down to lunch, our Guatemalan guide told us that our package didn’t include drinks (including water) and we would have to pay for our water separately. This came as a surprise since in the emails and on the website, it was clear that all of lunch was included. The email reservation confirmation stated, “All costs for lunch are already covered in your booking.” Others on our tour were not charged for their drinks. Water was a ridiculous $12 USD for the 4 of us in our group. When I emailed Belizing to notify them about it after the fact, we received an apology but nothing else was done to try to rectify the fact that we were, in essence, charged twice for the water. All in all we had a good trip, despite the bumps in our day. We had visited Xunantunich earlier in our stay in Belize (through a different company) and I’m very glad we did both, and that we did Xunantunich first. Tikal is much larger, but the experience at Xunantunich helped us understand what we were seeing at Tikal better.

TIKAL
The tour was very good, interesting and well paced. The lunch was excellent. My only complaint was that there was no transport waiting for us after returning to Belize. Our guide was in Guatemala and we didn't know what to do. After more that 20 minutes, transport arrived but by then we were exhausted and uncomfortable. I had a 7am pick up and got back at 6pm - an 11 hour day.

Great day at Tikal
This was a great tour. The Belize Ground Shuttle driver, Jerrod, was a joy on our early morning ride to the border. He got us through the Belizean side of the border. Omar met us on the Guatemalan side and answered several questions about the customs form. Omar and the driver, Ronny, were excellent throughout the day. Omar is very good at spotting birds in the tree canopy. We saw toucans, parrots, ... more and several red headed woodpeckers. A camera with a 500mm lens would have been wonderful but I don't want to carry it. Omar taught us a great deal about the temples and pyramids in Tikal. Climbing to the top of several is highly recommended. When we got back to Belize, Jerrod was waiting for us and quickly got us back to our accommodations.

Would have liked more time and more depth of info
There's a lot of great things I can add about the tour. The transportation was first class and the driver was very knowledgeable of the area and helpful with getting through the immigration process at the border. The food provided on-site is quite good with an adequate selection for most everyone. And of course, Tikal is an amazing site to visit and there's so much to talk about. I highly recommend ... more a visit. Our on-site guide was Nate. A nice guy with an interest in Maya mythology. But here's the rub, he sat in the shade while we independently explored the main plaza plus temple 4. I saw carvings and stucco reliefs on temple walls that I wanted to know more about, but Nate is sitting somewhere in the shade. He said all faces are Cha'ak, the rain god. Yet I saw some distinct differences that made me wonder if he was correct. For the late classic I can understand the preoccupation with Cha'ak due to the long-term drought. But one of the stucco reliefs was covered by a later wall, presumably prior to the drought. Ok, so I'm a Maya nerd which is likely an unusual guest for Nate to deal with. If you are a Maya nerd, Nate will probably come up short in your view as he did in mine.

Exceptional Tour
Omar was an exceptional tour guide. Not only did he know all about the history of the ruins and the paths in the park, he knew everyone there, including all of the plant species. He shared some Mayan and Guatemalan history on the drive and helped ensure a very smooth border crossing. This is well worth the price. We stayed at Cahal Pech resort and although it was in town there seems to be a festival ... more going on so music was blasting all night. I would not recommend staying here if anything is going on in town.

Cool trip - Tikal Tour
We (my 2 sons and me) had a great tour. There were 2 other guests from Canada (Hi Penny, Hi Marc) very nice team. Both drivers took us safely to Tikal. Omar was an awesome guide - I was having my long lens with me and Omar showed me 3 different birds incl. a Tucan - what a day! Tikal as such is also impressive and Omar told us quite a bit! Highly recommended!

Tikal Tour
The whole process was so easy and effortless thanks for Belizing.com. Maria was very responsive when I was asking questions regarding the tour and once it was booked, I immediately received a very detailed itinerary. The drive from San Ignacio to the Western Border was a quick 15-20 minute drive, then we switched vehicles on the Guatemala side. Omar was our tour guide and he was very informative and ... more went along with our pace. Tikal was a once in a lifetime experience and I would do it all over again. The lunch included in the tour was SO delicious. Definitely one of the best meals I’ve had. I would recommend this tour to all of my friends and family. I felt safe the entire time.

Easy trip, great guide, brand new bus
Great trip, pick up at the hotel was appreciated, the bus from the border to Tikal was a brand new Toyota 12 seater with cold AC. The lunch was three courses and very good, our guide Noel was fantastic, for the price it was amazing. One thing to keep in mind is that they don’t provide water, but it wasn’t an issue. We drove ourselves to the border, went through Belize immigration without a hitch (bring $20/person for everyone over the age of 12 for the exit fee if the tour doesn’t include it). Noel met us after that and showed us where to cross the Guatemala border. There was only our family of 3 and another person, ... more so it was almost a private tour. The van was clean and comfortable, the AC cold, and Noel told us many interesting tidbits about his country. He clearly loves Guatemala and was a wealth of knowledge. We stopped on the way for some coffee and a bathroom break. Tikal was exceptional, an amazing site that we were grateful to be able to witness. The tour was a combination, guided and personal time to climb certain Temples and look around. It was a hot and long day, but was worth it. We had a tasty lunch that was included (apart from the drinks), and on the way back even saw some howler and spider monkeys. We drove back and made it to our lodgings earlier than expected, since there were only 4 of us on the tour and everything went smoothly. We went through immigration quick and made it to our car that was safely left in the parking lot. Thank you Noel, the driver, and TikalGo for a memorable day!

Highly recommend choosing TikalGo and ask for Omar!!
Man, Omar was an absolute wealth of information and a pleasure to spend the day with. My family and I had an amazing trip to Tikal with Omar as our host. We had great conversations to, from, and during the guided tour. He truly loves his job and it shows which makes all the difference. He taught us so much about Mayan culture, Guatemalan culture, and the natural world surrounding us on our hike. Since ... more I brought my camera and showed an interest in local flora and fauna, he sought out birds and wildlife such as the keel billed toucan and white chested parrots while navigating the jungle trails. We learned so much and saw the main highlights during our day trip, such as temples 1,2,3, acropolis, necropolis, and pyramids. I’d love to go back in the future and spend several days there seeing everything else with Omar as our guide. We brought our sons (5 and 7) and it was a fair bit of walking and climbing but they did great. I tracked my distance using the Garmin phenix 6 which clocked us at 6.25 miles in total. The lunch at the restaurant was absolutely delicious as well. Highly recommend the beef, it may have been the most tender steak i’ve ever had. Everything was delicious.

Expectations exceeded!
This trip was excellent! We met in downtown San Ignacio and took the short trip to the border in a sprinter-van style vehicle. The border crossing was very easy, even with our young kids (ages 7 & 9). Our guide met us at the door in Guatemala and we rode to Tikal in another very comfortable van. Our guide was so knowledgeable and did a great job answering all of my son's questions. Lunch at the restaurant ... more in the park was delicious, although it came at the end of the tour so eat a big breakfast or bring some snacks for the kids along the way. This trip exceeded our expectations and was so smooth and fun!

Very Informative Tikal Tour
Our guide Noel, who met us at the Guatemalan side of the border, was not only very knowledgeable about Mayan culture and the Tikal ruins, but also told us about recent Guatemalan history and economy. Overall a very informative tour.

Yumee was amazing!
The entire day went smoothly and was such a lovely experience. We were able to learn so much and experience the Tikal park with someone who clearly knew her stuff. Yumee was the best tour guide we could have hoped for-I've been on many tours, but her knowledge and perspective of life in Mayan times and life in Guatemala today was incredible-the best yet. Thank you so much for answering all of our ... more wild/sometimes silly questions. The park and ruins themselves were fascinating as was the wildlife all around the park. Lunch was also delicious (there was a very yummy vegan option) and the drive/border crossing easy. All in all, excellent experience all around.

TikalGo Tour
My husband and I really enjoyed the tour of Tikal. Christian met us at the Belize-Guatemala border and we were driven through the beautiful countryside of Guatemala to Tikal (just over an hour drive). Once at Tikal, two more joined us, and Christian shared the history and highlights of the sites as they related to the Mayan civilization. I appreciated that we had time to explore independently while ... more also having the benefit of a knowledgeable guide. I was surprised as the quality and experience of lunch--it was a genuine and delicious three-course sit-down meal!

Did they meet you on the Belize side of the border, help you get through over to Guatemala? I'm worried I have to get myself through the border.

Our driver on the Belize side dropped us off at the border and explained the process to us. We independently walked into the Belize immigration area, paid the fee, showed our passports and vaccine cards, and then walked across the border to the Guatemalan side, where we again showed our passports and vaccine cards. Masks were required in the Guatemalan immigration area at the time (early July 2022). ... more My husband and I were not accompanied by the tour guides during the actual border crossing process through Customs/Immigration. Christian from TikalGo then met us immediately after exiting the gated area. On the return, Christian accompanied us to the gate on the Guatemalan side, and explained what to expect for the return (showing passports/vaccines again). Our driver was then waiting for us on the Belize side.

Tikal Day Trip with TikalGo
What an amazing experience! Eduardo is an excellent guide! He is friendly, knowledgeable, and did not rush us through Tikal as some tours do. He allowed us to experience the ruins at our own pace. Not only does he know about the Mayan culture and the site but he was excellent at spotting birds and other animals. Our driver was also courteous and vigilant while avoiding the stray dogs in Guatemala. ... more 5 stars!

Awesome experience and customer service!
Had a wonderful experience yesterday June 26, 2022 with Tikal Go. Took advantage of their private tour for our family of 4. Marlon picked us up from our lodge in the forest in Belize, conveyed us to the border crossing, provided information on next steps and where to meet our Guatemalan guide Christian on the other side. Christian and our driver Sylvan drove us to Tikal while sharing much of the history ... more of the Mayan peoples of the greater Yucatán region. At Tikal Christian explained the unique architectural and astronomical precision of the temples and how they were built. We explored around the main plaza and climbed the magnificent Temple 4. Then we were treated to a delicious lunch in the only restaurant hidden in the forest! Christian and Sylvan then returned us safely to the border, we waved goodbye to our new friends and said hello to Marlon on the Belizean side. Marlon ensured all our passports had been appropriately stamped and we were good to go for our return to the lodge. We visited on a Sunday, so no issues with crowds or border crossing delays. An awesome day - unbelievable archeological site - and stellar experience with Tikal Go!! The drivers and our guide were consummate professionals. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Experience!!!
We had a fantastic time yesterday on our trip to Tikal. Every single aspect truely exceeded our expectations. My mom has mobility limitations, and they made sure to transport her to the base of the ruins, and patiently helped her navigate the four main temples. Our drivers did a great job, and our tour guide, Christian, was phenomenal! On a side note, the meal they provide is great. It's a very large ... more portion of gourmet food, and includes a free beverage. I'd highly recommend this tour group to anyone, with no hesitation or reservation!

Our Tikal Go drivers were great. Our tour guide, Christian, was a nice guy and obviously knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Tikal itself is fantastic. It's epic and grandiose, and well worth your time. One heads up though, be prepared for a lot of stairs.

Terrific Day at Tikal
Our group of 4 had a wonderful time on our TikalGo tour to the archeological site. Our Belizean driver was great and our Guatemalan driver and guide were equally so. All were welcoming, knowledgeable and very helpful. Our border crossing was seamless and our ride to Tikal was filled with pleasant conversation and information about the people and the country. Tikal, of course, was breathtaking. The ... more day started out overcast which was perhaps a bit disappointing in regard to picture taking, but the best regarding temperature! It was very pleasant. We arrived early and thus avoided crowds. There were still plenty of people around, but it was easy to move about and see all we wanted to see. One of our group was on the mend from a knee injury and our guide was able to secure us a place on the Jungle Jalopy. It was helpful for her to knock off the initial hike from the gate to the site. Due to the addition of stairs and landings, she was able to (slowly) climb with the rest of us to the upper level of a couple of temples to experience the spectacular views. Temple IV had been my favorite from a previous visit many years ago and I was rewarded again on this visit. It's beautiful to look out over the forest canopy. Especially as the clouds cleared to reveal a beautiful sky. Lunch was included in the tour and was delicious. There were several options to choose from and each of us found something we really enjoyed. There were a couple of shopping opportunities, but no pressure to buy. All in all, it was a truly excellent day. I highly recommend the experience with TikalGo.

Fabulous day out
We went on a private tour which was top class door to door service. This allowed us to leave at 6.30am which meant we missed all the border crowds. Noel was a great guide - gave us all the information we needed - and constantly checking we were enjoying the tour. Delicious lunch included! All in all we thoroughly recommend TikalGo

Tikal GO: Tikal, Flores and Yaxha
From San Ignacio in Belize we decided to hop over to Tikal and found local Agency Tikal Go that organized the Guatemala tour for us. With transport to the border included, where we were picked up by driver and our guide. Tikal was amazing and we got a ton of background info along the way and great lunch in the park. From there it was on to Flores where Carlos greeted us at the lovely hotel downtown ... more to make sure all was perfect. We could spend the late afternoon, evening and the next morning in Flores. In the afternoon we visited Yaxha and witnessed an impressive sunset over the Yaxha lake. Then it was back to San Ignacio in similar fashion as the day before. Very well spend 2 days in Guatemala, too bad we did not have more time.

Tikal Tour was incredible! Go there.
We had a wonderful day trip to Tikal. We booked the trip for our family of four to do a private tour. We drove all over Belize but wanted to maximize our day to Tikal and booked a tour instead. Our guide, Noel, was absolutely wonderful to spend the day with and tour the area. He was friendly, highly knowledgeable, spoke amazing English and was patient and great with both our kids (ages 9 and 15). ... more The lunch provided was delightful and our 9 year old enjoyed learning how to make tortillas too. I'd highly recommend Tikal Go and Noel to anyone considering this trip.
