Gold Standard Program

The Belize Tourism Gold Standard Certification is focused on enhancing the hotel, restaurant, and tour operator cleaning practices, social interactions, workplace policies, and standard operating procedures, while ensuring minimal impact on the guest experience.

The program also aims to guarantee that both tourism employees and travellers are confident in the cleanliness, health and safety of Belize's tourism products.

An extensive 9-point certification process is being carried out by the Belize Tourism Board. All hotels in Belize will be required to certify under this program. When travel reopens, only Gold Certified hotels will be allowed to accept international guests. As the situation evolves, the program and requirements may also change.  Learn More about the Gold Standard program in Episode 23 of The Belize Travelcast. Learn about the Belize travel restrictions and get the latest travel updates on our Covid-19 resource page.

Podcast
Ted Tejada joins us remotely via telephone to discuss how Belize has fared during the coronavirus pandemic and the efforts to prepare for visitors after our borders are reopened. Ted ... moreis the president of the Belize Hotel Association and general manager of the Belize Best Western Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City. In this episode, he gives us some insight into how the tourism industry in Belize was caught off guard, just as the rest of the world, but how the country then took decisive action to mitigate the spread. Belize now ranks 5th globally as one of the most prepared countries in the world to lift its COVID-19 lockdown measures. As of this recording, Belize had recorded 18 cases, with only 2 active cases remaining. While the borders, including the airport, are still closed, the country continues to make post-COVID preparations. Ted gives us some insight into some of the policies and procedures being developed by different organizations in Belize such as the Belize Hotel Association, National Institute of Culture and History, Belize Airport Authority, and the Belize Tourism Board. A collective effort is being made throughout the country to put protocols and policies in place, with a phased reopening being planned. Ted reaffirms that Belize is a destination worth waiting for, and he assures us that everything possible is being done to ensure the safety of guests when tourism gets back on track.

Safe Corridor

A Safe Corridor methodology will be used for visitors in the first phase or reopening.

According to the Belize Tourism Board, "The Safe Corridor provides for only approved hotels and tour operators who have been trained to operate in this new environment to host international travellers.  It will also limit interactions between guests and the local community thereby reducing the possible spread of the virus."

This means that from the moment you clear the airport, to the moment you depart the country, you will not have free range within the country. You will stay at specific safe corridor hotels, use authorized transportation providers, go on approved tours with gold standard tour operators, and check in daily with the Belize Health and Travel app.

Safe Corridor approved hotels will have:
  • Full service restaurant and bar; OR
  • Fully furnished kitchen with the ability to offer grocery delivery services for guests; OR
  • Establish an agreement with a licensed restaurant or catering service to provide daily meals for guests
Additionally, these properties must also have a pool and/or beach front access, on-site guest entertainment/activities (games, gym, spa), and the ability to provide guided tours for guests.

During this safe corridor phase, properties will be required to manage and control the movements of their guests, as guests will not be permitted to explore the country on their own.
