Just a few miles off the coast of Belize is Ambergris Caye – it’s 40 km long and less than 2 km wide. It’s one of Belize’s most popular islands, primarily drawing visitors that are interested in diving or snorkeling Belize’s reef, which is the
second-largest barrier reef in the world. However, what tourists also find when they visit Ambergris Caye is that there are plenty of things to do other than diving or snorkeling. Below I will list 5 of these experiences.
1. Explore San Pedro Town
San Pedro Town is the main settlement in Ambergris Caye and its downtown core has many things to see, do, and explore. I recommend going downtown for breakfast or lunch, and then walking on the main street or by the beach, to see the many colorful shops and bars that San Pedro has.
2. Great Blue Hole Fly Over Tour
Diving the Great Blue Hole may be on every diver’s bucket list but what is less known is that visitors can also go on a
scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole. The flyover tour lasts about an hour, and along with getting up-close views of Belize’s famous Blue Hole, passengers are treated to striking views of the barrier reef.

3. Enjoy San Pedro’s Food Scene
Ambergris Caye has excellent restaurants and beach bars. Restaurants such as Elvi’s Kitchen, Blue Water Grill, and Wild Mangos are consistently ranked as some of the best in Belize. As for bars, they are all great but my favorites are Wayos, Sandy Toe’s, and the Palapa Bar. They are perfect for listening to live music while enjoying bar snacks and a Belikin beer or rum punch.
4. Go on a Sunset Cruise
There’s something really magical about
watching sunsets on a catamaran while fresh ceviche and delicious rum punches are being served. And when the sun finally goes down, visitors are treated to beautiful starry night skies - something that someone has to see to truly appreciate. This experience is something that visitors will remember long after their vacation is over.
5. Visit Secret Beach
For a fun day, I suggest renting a golf cart to visit
Secret Beach in North Ambergris Caye. Although Secret Beach is about an hour’s drive north of downtown San Pedro, it’s totally worth the visit. It’s one of the island’s best spots to relax, swim, and enjoy good beats while having delicious food and drinks.
Where to stay
Located approximately 5 km south of the downtown core,
Pelican Reef Villas serves as the perfect base during a trip to Ambergris Caye. Along with staying at luxurious modern villas, the resort offers amenities such as a restaurant, bar, pool, boat dock, and private beach. It is the perfect place to return after a long day of fun activities since guests can enjoy the tranquility of South Ambergris Caye while lounging by the pool or on the beach.
