Gold Standard Program

The Belize Tourism Gold Standard Certification is focused on enhancing the hotel, restaurant, and tour operator cleaning practices, social interactions, workplace policies, and standard operating procedures, while ensuring minimal impact on the guest experience.

The program also aims to guarantee that both tourism employees and travellers are confident in the cleanliness, health and safety of Belize's tourism products.

An extensive 9-point certification process is being carried out by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB). All hotels in Belize will be required to certify under this program. When travel reopens, only Gold Certified hotels will be allowed to accept international guests. As the situation evolves, the program and requirements may also change.  Learn More about the Gold Standard program in Episode 23 of The Belize Travelcast. Learn about the Belize travel restrictions and get the latest travel updates on our Covid-19 resource page.

Safe Corridor

A Safe Corridor methodology is recommended for visitors while visiting Belize.

According to the Belize Tourism Board, "The Safe Corridor provides for approved hotels and tour operators who have been trained to operate in this new environment to host international travellers."

The Safe Corridor is no longer a requirement, but is encouraged as the best approach for health and safety of all. This means you are encouraged to use Gold Standard providers for accomodation, tours, activities, and transportation. You can identify Gold Standard providers by the Gold Standard badge.

You are required to stay at Gold Standard hotels, and you are encouraged to use authorized transportation providers, go on approved tours with gold standard tour operators.

The Safe Corridor restrictions were relaxed as of October 19th, 2020. You are now be able to move about the communities more freely and use rental cars. More details can be provided by your hotel.

Gold Standard approved hotels will have:
  • Full service restaurant and bar; OR
  • Fully furnished kitchen with the ability to offer grocery delivery services for guests; OR
  • Establish an agreement with a licensed restaurant or catering service to provide daily meals for guests
Additionally, these properties may also have a pool and/or beach front access, on-site guest entertainment/activities (games, gym, spa), and the ability to provide guided tours for guests.

During this safe corridor phase, properties will be required to manage and control the movements of their guests, as guests will not be permitted to explore the country on their own.
