El Pilar is a Mayan Ruin located about 7 miles from Bullet Tree Falls village in Cayo, Belize. This site is still being excavated, and most structures are in the early stages of excavation. An interesting feature of this site is a causeway that runs along the eastern edge of the site all the way across the border of the country into Guatemala. So far, 12 pyramids and 25 plazas have been discovered at El Pilar. It is believed to have been inhabited from 500 BC to 1000 AD. There are a variety of different residential structures at the sight, including an elite household, and also ceremonial

Altun Ha dates back to 200 B.C. and covers an area of 44 acres. Southern Belize is home to some of the most important ceremonial centers of the region. Lubantun is Mayan for "Place of the Fallen Stones," noted for its unusual and finest style of ... moreconstruction in the Maya World. An administrative, religious, political, and commercial center, mainly used for occasional festivals, ball games, and other sacred ceremonies. An abundance of ceramic whistle figurines (charm stones) or ritual-accompanying accouterments and tombs have been found here. The center of this site is on a large artificially raised platform between two small rivers, noting that the situation is well-suited for military defense. The large pyramids and residences are made of large stone blocks with no visible mortar binding them together, primarily black slate rather than the limestone typical of the region. Unlike other Maya sites, the existing structures are solid with no doorways and rounded corners, unique features not found in other sites of the region. The buildings on top of the pyramids are believed to have been made from perishable materials rather than masonry and hence do not remain. The famous yet controversial crystal skull was supposedly discovered here in 1926. Anna Mitchell-Hedges, the adoptive daughter of archaeologist Fredrick A. Mitchell-Hedges claimed that she had found the ‘crystal skull’ here during her father’s second trip to Belize, an expedition for her seventeenth birthday. This perfectly shaped 8-inch human skull crystal is still owned by Anna who lives in Canada. The origin of the crystal skull still remains a mystery. After exploring Lubantun we enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant in the area, then we explore Nimli Punit. This small Mayan site dates back to the late classic period and is regarded as a ceremonial center. Its name is derived from a carving on one of the site's twenty-six stelae, the highest concentration found in Belize and the Mayan world, which depicts a figure wearing a large headdress. During recent excavations, the second-largest, single jade artifact found in Belize was discovered here amongst many other relics. In the Kekchi Maya dialect, Nimli Punit translates to "big hat." The monument on which this carving appears is the largest stelae found to date in Belize and the second largest in the Mayan World. Located across the Belize/Guatemala border, Yaxha (blue/green–water) has 500 buildings on 3 sq. kilometers. It was inhabited from 800 BC. to 1450 AD. and is located on a slope overlooking ... morea major lake of the same name. From the top of its temples, the view is water or jungle to the horizon, a view so unique since the Maya never built their cities near water. Yaxha is better than Caracol in architecture, setting, and wildlife, plus you don’t need to go on a dirt road for 2 1/2 hrs each way. Xunantunich Mayan ruin, also known as the "Maiden of the Rock” is the second tallest Mayan ruin in Belize. Xunantunich is located across from Benque Viejo Road near the village of San Jose Succotz just a few miles from Belize’s western border with Guatemala. From there a hand-cranked ferry will take you across the Mopan River. From the other side of the river, it's a mile uphill to the site, which can be accessed on foot or in a vehicle.

The ATM Cave is a "must do" tour experience- and it's easily accessible!! The tour starts with a 45 min hike through the jungle in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. It is a great ... moreway to soak in the majesty of the surrounding jungle. You will cross three rivers as you wind your way through the jungle to the mouth of the cave. The tour duration is approximately 3 hours. Bring along a change of clothes as you will be completely wet by the time the tour is over. Understanding why this cave was of such sacred importance to the Mayas requires an understanding of their spirituality. In the Maya religion, the gods of agriculture, rain, and fertility were believed to reside in the underworld. It would only seem natural that the ATM Cave, with its seemingly endless pits, would be seen as a potential gateway to the underworld. By making human sacrifices within the cave, they could appeal to these important gods practically at their front door.
Guests should dress as if preparing for a hike, bringing comfortable clothes and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Also, socks are mandatory for walking inside the cave. Bear in mind that no cameras are allowed within the cave. The prohibition of cameras prevents damage to remaining skeletons and artifacts and preserves ATM for future generations.
