Tip: Download Episode 23 of The Belize Travelcast to learn more about what to expect when you visit Belize.

Pre-travel process

All visitors to Belize must download the Belize Health app on their mobile phone. This will help authorities manage your movement in Belize and provide timely communication to  you. [The app is still in development. Download links will be posted here on]

After you receive your hotel confirmation, you will then register your travel on the Belize Health app. You will then be provided with a unique QR code ID which you will need on arrival in Belize.

Those who are not visiting as tourists (citizens, homeowners, etc) will also need to submit a travel application and other proof of interests in Belize.

Visitors are also highly encouraged to take a PCR test (not an antibody test) within 72 hours (3 days) of your original travel departure to Belize which will fast track your entry into the country. A certified negative result will put you on the fast track arrival lane at the airport.

You will be able to upload your test results via the app. An official email or correspondence from the testing facility will be acceptable. We recommend bringing as much documentation/proof as possible. It is still possible that you will be selected for testing at the airport when you arrive.

If you don't have a certified test prior to arrival, you will be required to take a rapid test at your own expense when you arrive at the airport. The cost of the rapid test will be $50 USD. You may also bring your own rapid test kit to be administered by health officials at the airport in Belize.

All arriving Belizean nationals, residents, homeowners, retirees (QRP), long-stay non nationals, and those with business concerns will required to take a mandatory PCR test and quarantine for at least one day at an approved hotel at their own expense. This allows time to return the testing results. PCR tests done abroad are not being accepted for foreign second home owners or QRPs.

Learn more about the different traveler classification and different travel restrictions based on your classification.
Anyone that tests positive on arrival, will be required by law to enter a 14-day quarantine at an approved quarantine hotel at your own expense, irrespective of your existing hotel booking or other accomodation.

Upon arrival at the airport, we will have enhanced health screening, temperature checks, and verification of your unique ID from health app.

The Ministry of Health has established a testing area at the international airport just outside of Terminal 2.  The clinic can accommodate 12 passengers at a time for testing, and is air conditioned with restroom facilities.

You will be provided with a Safe Corridor "Welcome to Belize" wristband to if you are visiting as a tourist. This must be worn in order to gain access to your domestic transportation, exit the airport grounds, and to check in to your hotel.

During your stay, you must adhere to all health and safety protocols in Belize including social distancing, and wearing of masks in public. You will be required to check in daily via the Belize Health App.

*Additional details are available via the official press release from the Belize Tourism Board. The protocols are subject to change as the situation evolves. All updates will be posted on this site.

Belize Travel Health App

All visitors to Belize must register via the Belize Travel Health App before entering the country. You will need to register on the app no earlier than 72 hours before your arrival in Belize.

What is the Belize Health App and where do I get it?

The Belize Travel Health app is a mobile application that will serve as your digital mobile passport to enter Belize.

The app is available on the Apple App Store and as a direct download for Android devices.

The App is free for your smartphone or tablet and will allow for Belize's Ministry of Health to manage your stay, provide timely communication to you, and assist with contact tracing if any new cases arise.

This is where you will eventually fill in your customs and immigration forms, in addition to all information you will need to submit prior to and upon arrival. The plan is to also integrate this with your hotel booking. The full integration of the app with Customs and Immigration is scheduled for November.

If you don't have a smartphone or tablet, you should submit the Belize Ministry of Health self-reporting form.

Protocols & Restrictions

Safe Corridor

A Safe Corridor methodology will be used for visitors in the first phase or reopening.

According to the Belize Tourism Board, "The Safe Corridor provides for only approved hotels and tour operators who have been trained to operate in this new environment to host international travellers.  It will also limit interactions between guests and the local community thereby reducing the possible spread of the virus."

This means that from the moment you clear the airport, to the moment you depart the country, you will not have free range within the country. You will stay at specific safe corridor hotels, use authorized transportation providers, go on approved tours with gold standard tour operators, and check in daily with the Belize Health and Travel app.

As you clear the airport upon arrival, you will be provided with a Safe Corridor wristband. This will identify you as an approved guest of a Safe Corridor hotel so that you can access approved transportation and process through airport exit security on your way to your hotel. Your wristband will also be identify you to hotel staff as you check in to your gold standard safe corridor hotel.

Safe Corridor approved hotels will have:
  • Full service restaurant and bar; OR
  • Fully furnished kitchen with the ability to offer grocery delivery services for guests; OR
  • Establish an agreement with a licensed restaurant or catering service to provide daily meals for guests
Additionally, these properties must also have a pool and/or beach front access, on-site guest entertainment/activities (games, gym, spa), and the ability to provide guided tours for guests.
During this safe corridor phase, properties will be required to manage and control the movements of their guests, as guests will not be permitted to explore the country on their own.
*Browse the Official List of Gold Standard Hotels. Note that only the hotels marked as "Safe Corridor" will be available for stays during the initial phase 3 reopening.

Non-tourist visitors will also be required to enter a minimum 1-day quarantine and subsequent 13-day self-isolation or quarantine depending on their test results.

Tourists may only stay at certified Gold Standard Hotels in Belize. Rental cars will not be available in the first phase or reopening. All transportation and tours within Belize must be arranged through your hotel with approved Gold Standard service providers. As of May 15, The Institute of Archaeology, National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) announced that most archaeological reserves are open to visitation.

Some caves will be open for visitation as of August 3rd, including the ATM Cave, Barton Creek Cave, and Nohoch Che'en Cave

What is the Belize Gold Standard for Health & Safety

Belize had adopted a stringent set of standards that all hotels, tour operators, and transportation providers must follow before they are allowed to accept international guests. The Gold Standard Certificate of Recognition means that hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operations must develop and maintain sanitization and cleanliness standards before being approved to accept international guests.

Will I be denied entry into Belize?

Citizens and diplomats may enter for emergencies, but all others will be denied. Read the Official Announcement.

As of April 5th, Belizean Citizens will NOT be allowed to enter the country through any land border except for emergencies. As of May 18, some Belizans who have been stranded outside of Belize will be allowed entry through coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Belize Government, through the Ministry of Health, is actively screening everyone coming through all official ports of entry. ALL persons allowed to enter Belize will be subject to a self-isolation or quarantine order at their own expense.

August 15th reopening was delayed. The Airport will now reopen on October 1st.

Are there restrictions for visitors from certain countries?

[Update July 1] All borders remain closed! However, Belizeans who have been stranded outside of Belize are now allowed to return. This will be coordinated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There are no restrictions with regards to the nationality of the visitors. Visitors from all counties are welcomes to visit. Everyone will be required to present a negative PCR Covid-19 test upon arrival, or take a rapid test at the airport. Certain guidelines will be in place.

Will I need a Covid-19 Test to Travel to Belize?

Yes, everyone will be required to take a PCR or rapid test and have a negative result to enter Belize. You are encouraged to take a PCR test no more than 72 hours prior to your original travel departure to Belize. This will also put you on the fast track processing at the airport.

If you do not have a valid PCR test before arrival, you will be required to take a rapid test at the airport health screening station. The cost of testing at the airport is $50 USD.

Will I be placed in quarantine?

Before Reopening: Any national or foreigner arriving in Belize will be viewed as a potential case and ALL such persons, without exception, are required to go into a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.
Per the Quarantine Authority, any Belizean entering Belize from any country through any official port of entry or caught attempting to enter via any blind spot will be placed in a mandatory quarantine centre designated by the Quarantine Authority of Belize. Persons will be placed into quarantine at their own cost, which may be up to $110 per day for accommodation and three meals.

After reopening: When the airport reopens, a screening process will be in place. If you test positive upon arrival or while in the country, you will be required to enter a 14-day quarantine at your own expense.

If you are a resident or returning citizen not booked at an approved hotel, then you will not be eligible for a rapid test at the airport. Citizens and residents not arriving as tourists must have a PCR test done in Belize. If you do it at the airport, then you may also be required to enter a 14-day quarantine.

Our best recommendation for leisure travel visitors is to get a negative PCR test within 72 hours of travel. This will fast-track your airport processing in Belize. If this is not possible, testing is available at the airport but you should plan for additional delays upon arrival. Keep in mind that if you test positive at the airport, your vacation will be spent in quarantine at your own expense.

If you suspect that you may have been exposed to COVID-19 before traveling to Belize, we ask that you cancel your trip and not attempt to enter the country.

Please continue checking this web page and the official Government Press Office Facebook page for new updates.

Should I cancel my travel plans to Belize?

We hope you do not need to cancel. We're looking forward to sunny days ahead when you can visit Belize. If you are sick or have been in contact with or close proximity to people who are infected, we ask that you please make the most responsible decision and cancel or postpone your travel plans even when our borders are eventually reopened. We encourage you to make the best decision for you and your family, while also considering the wellbeing of those around you, including those in the places you plan to visit.

If you have obvious symptoms on arrival into Belize or arrive from a restricted country, you may be placed in quarantine at your own expense, or denied entry to Belize altogether.

If you cannot travel due to restrictions out of your control, we encourage you to consider putting your bookings on hold for a later date and avoid cancellation or other fees that may be assessed. Contact your accommodation and other service providers for details. At this time, email or other online communication may be most effective due to the high volume of inquiries.

If you made a booking on, see here for more information.

Cancelation and Refunds

Can I cancel my booking? enables direct booking with local licensed providers in Belize. Since your booking is direct with each service provider, you may be restricted by their cancelation policy. The main question is whether and how much refund you may get. In most cases, we believe you can get a full refund.

Contact the Service Provider First. We recommend messaging the service provider via your Belizing Inbox before canceling your booking. If YOU cancel the booking, then the refund policy of the service provider applies and no automatic refund may be provided. If the SERVICE PROVIDER cancels the booking, then you will always get a FULL refund. For this reason, we recommend communicating with the service provider first to ask if they agree to a full refund. If yes, ask them to initiate the cancelation from their Belizing Inbox.

Consider Changing your Date. We recommend considering a date change for your travel plans. Some cancelations may incur a fee or 3 to 30% depending on the policy from the service provider. There is no fee to change your travel dates. You must communicate with the service provider to agree on a new date or to hold your booking until you have confirmed new travel dates.

Check your Confirmation Email. Please check your booking confirmation email for the cancelation policy that applies to your booking. The email will include your voucher number, as well as the details of the cancelation timeline and fees that may apply. Check your junkmail folder if you cannot find the email. Please reference your voucher number when communicating with your service provider or staff.

If you do not agree with any decision by the service provider, then staff can mediate to find a resolution. You can contact us directly at or message us on Facebook. We are here to help and we understand the frustration that this pandemic is causing to both travelers and tour companies alike.

How will my refund be processed?

All refunds for bookings made on or via Belizing Payments are automatically processed to your original form of payment. Once your refund is processed, it may take 5 to 10 business days for you to see it in your credit card statement. Refunds will show as a credit to your account.

Please do NOT dispute the charges. If you do not see the credit within 10 days, please contact us at

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is always a good idea for international travel. You should also check coverage offered by your credit cards used to pay for your bookings. However, if you’re purchasing it due to concerns related to COVID-19, be sure to read the policy carefully as rules may differ by company. Travel insurance may not widely cover cancellation or offer the travel flexibility you’re seeking. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to determine whether you are covered.
